How an Air Handler Works

by OnTime Home Services on June 4, 2015

Air-Handler

An air handler is much more than that big box that sits in your basement or garage―it’s an essential component of your heating and air conditioning system, working together with your air conditioner and heat pump or furnace to control the indoor climate in your home for comfort and good health. But how does it work?

Functions of the Air Handler

An air handler looks like a big box enclosed with sheet metal. It contains coils, an air filter, and a blower, as well as a noise dampening system. The air handler is connected to your home’s ductwork for distribution of the conditioned or heated air.

The evaporator coils of a central air conditioning system are situated next to the air handler so that the cooled air can be blown through the unit. As the air handler’s blower pushes the conditioned air, the air passes through the air filter and impurities such as dust, dander, mold spores, bacteria, and viruses are filtered out of the air before it is then pushed into your home’s air ducts.

Air Handler Maintenance

The most important part of maintaining an air handler is air filter replacement. A dirty air filter reduces the energy efficiency of your heating and cooling system and decreases indoor air quality throughout your home. For best results, you should replace the air filter in your air handler every three months.
