How to Maintain Your Air Conditioner Yourself

|

Being able to do air conditioner maintenance yourself not only provides you with a sense of accomplishment, but it could also save you a significant amount of money. DIY air conditioner maintenance only requires an hour or so of your time every few months, but that investment is well worth the results, which include better overall comfort, durability and reliability of the system.

Change the Air Filter

One of the simplest air conditioner maintenance activities is changing the air filter. Locate the air filter’s housing. If it is screwed shut, use a screwdriver to open it. Slide the air filter out. For permanent filters, clean it according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Most filters are disposable, which means that all you need to do is toss out the dirty filter and slide in the new filter. Reattach the housing and that is it.

Clean the Condensate Line

The condensate line is where the condensed water from the indoor air is drained away from the air conditioning unit. A clean and unobstructed condensate line is essential for the effective performance of the air conditioner and in preventing damage to the unit and your home. To clean it, first, detach the PCV pipe. Take it outside and use a garden hose to wash it out. Then, pour about one quart of bleach through the PVC pipe to kill any residual algae or mold spores within the pipe. Allow the pipe to dry and then reattach it to the connection location.

Clean the Coils

Dirt and dust buildup on the outdoor coils of the air conditioner reduces its efficiency and could cause the unit to overheat, leading to the need for an air conditioner repair. To clean the coils yourself, turn off the power to the unit. Remove the metal housing around the outdoor unit. Use a garden hose to spray off the coils. To clean the fins, use a special fin brush. Reattach the metal housing and restore power to the air conditioning system.
