Temecula winters are mild β but when temperatures drop into the 30s at night, a failing furnace is no joke. Here are the warning signs to watch for before it stops working entirely.
Southern California winters are famously mild compared to the rest of the country, but Temecula and the Inland Empire regularly see overnight lows in the 30s and 40s from December through February. A furnace that's struggling or failing can make for a very uncomfortable few days β especially if it gives out on the coldest night of the year.
Here are the warning signs our technicians see most often before a furnace fails completely.
1. Unusual Noises
A healthy furnace runs with a consistent, relatively quiet hum. If you're hearing banging, popping, rattling, or squealing, something is wrong. Banging often indicates a delayed ignition β gas is building up before it ignites, which is both a performance issue and a safety concern. Rattling can mean a loose component or a cracked heat exchanger (a serious issue). Squealing typically points to a worn blower belt or motor bearings.
2. Inconsistent Heating
If some rooms in your home are warm and others are cold, or if the temperature fluctuates significantly even with the thermostat set consistently, your furnace may be struggling to distribute heat evenly. This can be caused by ductwork issues, a failing blower motor, or a dirty heat exchanger.
3. Higher Energy Bills
A furnace that's working harder than it should to heat your home will show up on your energy bill. If you notice a significant increase in your gas or electric bill without a corresponding change in usage habits or weather, your furnace efficiency may be declining.
4. Yellow or Orange Pilot Light
A healthy gas furnace has a blue pilot light. A yellow or orange flame indicates incomplete combustion, which can mean carbon monoxide is being produced. This is a safety issue β call us immediately at (951) 277-6895 if you see a yellow flame.
5. Frequent Cycling
If your furnace is turning on and off more frequently than usual (short cycling), it may be overheating due to a clogged filter, blocked vents, or a failing component. Short cycling puts significant stress on the system and can lead to premature failure.
6. Age
Most furnaces have a lifespan of 15β20 years. If yours is approaching or past that range, it's worth having it inspected even if it seems to be running fine. Older furnaces are significantly less efficient than modern units, and the cost of repairs on an aging system often doesn't make financial sense compared to replacement.
