Why Proper AC Installation Matters More Than the Brand

April 10, 20246 min read

The most common cause of premature AC failure isn't the equipment β€” it's the installation. Here's what a proper installation looks like and why it matters.

Homeowners spend a lot of time comparing AC brands β€” Carrier vs. Trane vs. Lennox vs. Rheem. It's a reasonable thing to research. But the dirty secret of the HVAC industry is that installation quality matters far more than brand for determining how long your system lasts and how efficiently it runs.

The Statistics Are Sobering

Studies by the California Energy Commission and the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) have found that the majority of residential HVAC systems in California are improperly installed. Common deficiencies include incorrect refrigerant charge, improper airflow, and duct systems that are leaky or improperly sized. These installation errors reduce efficiency by 20–40% and significantly shorten system lifespan.

What a Proper Installation Includes

Manual J load calculation: Proper sizing based on your home's specific characteristics β€” not just square footage or "what you had before."

Manual D duct design: If ductwork is being modified or installed, it should be designed to deliver the right airflow to each room. Undersized ducts restrict airflow; oversized ducts reduce velocity and cause uneven distribution.

Proper refrigerant charge: The refrigerant charge must be set precisely to the manufacturer's specification for your specific installation conditions. This requires measuring superheat and subcooling β€” not just adding refrigerant until it "feels right."

Airflow verification: Total system airflow should be measured and verified to be within 10% of the design specification.

Electrical verification: Wire sizing, breaker sizing, and disconnect requirements must meet code and manufacturer specifications.

Duct sealing: All duct connections should be sealed with mastic or metal tape (not standard duct tape, which fails quickly).

How to Evaluate a Contractor

Ask any contractor you're considering whether they perform Manual J calculations and measure refrigerant charge and airflow. A contractor who can't answer these questions confidently is not performing proper installations.
