How to Save Money on Heating Your Home

|

Even in sunny California, we see a few chilly winter months and need some extra warmth. However, heating your whole home with a furnace can be expensive when it is time to pay your utility bills at the end of the month.

At On Time Home Services, we are always happy to help our customers save money on home comfort. Here are some tips for how to save money on heating your home here in Winchester, California.

1. Lower your thermostat settings.

This might seem like an obvious solution, but many people don’t realize the different temperature settings can make. You can save up to 3% on your monthly bill per degree you lower the temperature on your thermostat. If you can stand to run the heat at a lower temperature and snuggle under a blanket, it will cut your cost.

2. Use your fans to circulate warm air.

If you set your ceiling fan to rotate in the opposite direction, it will move the warm air back down into the room. This will ensure that the warm air (which naturally rises) is properly circulated and stays in the room for a longer period of time.

3. Change your air filter.

An air filter clogged with dust and debris will not allow air to circulate through the ducts as efficiently. Change your air filter before the winter season so that particles trapped inside will not impede airflow.

4. Seal up air leaks around the house.

Sealing up cracks and leaks is a good idea for keeping in warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer. Common spots for air leaks are around doors, windows, vents, and outlets. Also, check in the attic.

5. Use space heaters.

Sometimes you can avoid turning the heat on altogether by simply using a space heater in one or two rooms. This can be especially effective at night since you can simply close the door to your bedroom and let the space heater keep you warm while you are sleeping.

6. Invest in a heat pump.

One of the most cost-effective heating methods for warmer climates like ours is a heat pump.
Heat pumps transfer warm air into your home and move cold air out of your home instead of generating heat from the fuel. They use significantly less energy than other heating systems, so they save you lots of money on utilities. Heat pumps are not ideal in more frigid areas, but they are perfect for moderate climates like the weather we experience here in Temecula.
